Frequently Asked Questions

Wedding Photography

Q: What type of photography do you do?

I would describe the type of wedding photography that I do as a documentary approach combined with fashion editorial / portraiture techniques to create Fresh, Modern & Fun images. I like to let my photos speak for themselves. Since you found these questions I am assuming they did just that and you like them as much as I do. Depending on the wedding Package you have chosen, and the hours allotted with that collection, I will follow you throughout the day capturing events and emotions as they happen. By the end of your wedding celebration, I should have an entire photographic collection of images chronicling the romance, fun and excitement of your day.

Q: I am having a beach or outdoor wedding, any helpful hints?

North Carolina's beaches make a beautiful setting for a wedding. Evening is the best time, photographically speaking for anything outside. Please try to configure the ceremony site so the photographer is not shooting directly into the sun if possible. But reguardless of how you set-up the ceremony I'm sure you'll love the photos from your romantic beach wedding.

Q: Do you take posed wedding party and family group photos?

Absolutely! When and where these photographs are taken is up to you. Look at your schedule to see where you can allow the time needed. Depending on how many people are included and how many poses you want, you will need to allow between 30 and 60 minutes. A lot of my couples are opting to take these photos before the ceremony. Since most of the people to be included are already there. For those brides who have kept their dress secret from their grooms, they usually take a few moments to allow her to dazzle him, then join in the fun. This takes the pressure off and allows you to leave afterwards. If your schedule will not allow for this, do not forget to schedule it elsewhere.

Q: Do you take romantic couple posed photos?

These are some of my favorite wedding photos to take. The formal posed pictures are usually accomplished while photographing the family & group portraits, many couples also elect for some private ones. Weather and time permitting, these can be done outside the church or reception site. Often times the couple arranges for time after the ceremony or reception and have even chosen a separate location all together, (such as the beach or a park).

Q: Can other people take photos during the wedding?

Of course they can. However due to the limited time of the event, anyone can photograph as long as they do not interfere with the photographers duties and they do not photograph poses arranged by the photographer, (the posed photos will go more smoothly and quickly if all eyes are on me). Remember, for outdoor events, on the beach or along the waterfront for example, we may be "chasing the sun." Time can be an issue. Like me family and guests will need to respect any restrictions placed by the event(s) or location(s) officials.

Q: Can we give you a shot list?

Please be assured as an experienced professional wedding photographer, the majority of my brides all request similar wedding photos. As a result it is customary to include such photos as the first dance, cake cutting, the toast etc. with all my wedding coverage. However, if you have a special photo in mind, please do not hesitate to let me know. Should you like to request specific people, please understand that I am unacquainted with your family and friends, therefore you will need to provide me with someone familiar with everyone.

Q: How many photographs will you take?

The number of photographs vary wedding to wedding. The total correlates with the amount of time included with your package, size of the wedding, amount of formal posed photos, types of events scheduled, number family, friends and guests, and how much, if any, time was allotted for romantic couple shots. I do eliminate any photos that do not meet my critique (closed eyes, etc.).

Q: Do I get the negatives?

All of my wedding packages include a disk or "thumb drive" of either high resolution files or low resolution digital proofs files. You will get a written release for your files so you can print the images, I do however retain the copyright on all photographs.

Q: What is a high resolution CD or DVD-rom?

A high resolution CD or DVD is a complete set of your color & exposure corrected files. These are the same files I use for creating finished prints. As such you can produce up to wall size prints, (it is typically used however, for archival purposes).

Q: What is a low resolution digital proofs CD or DVD?

The low resolution digital proofs CD or DVD, is just that, proofs. It is a complete set of your proofs (that means they have had basic color & exposure corrections). They will print with a boarder containing my web site address and a translucent logo in the corner. They are suitable for 4x6 prints (anything larger will not print clearly). These are fine for scrapbooking or sharing with friends.

Q: Why should I order my prints through you?

All images selected for prints, canvas, albums and misc. items through me have not only been color & exposure corrected but digitally enhanced with small imperfections or blemishes removed (as needed) or cropped for artistic effect or use (such as jewelry), this allows me to produce something a little extra special in your finished portraits. These choices are professionally printed (depending on size) on single or double matt board or quality paper to ensure exceptional merchandise.

Q: How long does it take to get my wedding proofs?

I make every effort to have your wedding proofs posted online, in the view proofs area, within two weeks after the event. You will receive (depending on what was included with your package) a complete boxed set (or proof book) and your CD or DVD is also a complete set (these items will be mailed to you as quickly as possible).

Q: Where and what is the view proofs area?

The view proofs area is the section of the web site where your wedding photographs can be viewed and purchased by you, your family or friends, (it is a secure shopping site). Just click on the link entitled View proofs at the entrance of the web site, (rddeckerphotography.com).

Q: I am undecided, will you hold my wedding date for me?

To help you decide, you might consider commissioning me to photograph an engagement session, (should you eventually purchase package A, which includes an engagement session, the $125.00 a la carte price will be deducted). This is a fun and easy way to confirm how well we can work together. In order to be fair to everyone, I cannot hold a date without a signed contract and the booking fee. I accept wedding clients on a first come, first served basis.

Q: I love your work and want to hire you, now what do I do?

E-mail or call me (at 252-726-5799) to confirm your date is still available. If we have not met yet, I would very much like to set a date and time to get together. This would allow me the opportunity to show you examples of wedding albums, answer any questions and make sure the wedding package you have chosen offers the coverage and extras you want. If time or geography does not permit this, and you have not previously received an information packet, I will mail, fax or email you a contract and the information you will need to complete the booking. Please return the signed contract and booking fee as soon as possible to guarantee your wedding day is reserved. I will make and mail you a printed statement, including a detailed invoice for the package you have chosen, along with any additional services or extras you have selected, and a copy of the signed contract. These are for your records.

Q: Will you travel to photograph my wedding?

Generally I photograph weddings throuhout North Carolina and along the Southeast coast from Virginia Beach, VA to Hilton Head, SC. I am willing to travel to shoot a wedding almost anywhere. Most of my weddings, however, are here in North Carolina. I travel up to 150 miles from Morehead City NC at no additional charge. For weddings 150 - 250 miles from Morehead City NC there is a $1.00 per mile charge. Weddings from 250 - 400 miles from Morehead City NC the charge increases to $2.00 per mile. Any wedding over 400 miles from Morehead City NC I require a $750.00 travel fee plus 2 nights lodging (and possible airfare).

Q: What type of equipment do you use?

To shoot weddings, I use only state of the art digital cameras and equipment, including a professional portable lighting system. This equipment virtually allows me to take studio quality portraits at any location. I always shoot with a minium of two cameras plus I carry a backup and a digital Infra-red camera if the location(s) are appropriate.

Q: Who will photograph my wedding?

I, R.D. Decker (Bob) am the wedding photographer. Occasionally I bring an assistant, second shooter or trainee. I will let you know ahead of time should I be doing so.

Q: What kind of clothing do you wear for the wedding?

I dress in a manner that allows me to perform my duties properly, while remaining as unobtrusive as possible. In most cases I wear black trousers and a black dress shirt. For beach weddings in the heat of summer, I may wear colors a bit cooler than black, but still something that allows me to blend into the background as much as possible.

Q: Do you require food or a meal during the wedding?

It would be appreciated, especially if your wedding coverage is 5 hours or more. Since I do not take photos of your guests eating (only you with the cake) this is a convenient time to check and change batteries, or do any necessary adjustments to equipment.

Q:What are some of the towns and cities you've worked in?

I've shot weddings all over the Southeastern U.S. and Midwest. Some of the North Carolina cities include: Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Salter Path, Emerald Isle, New Bern, Selma, Elizabeth City, Raleigh, Durham, Beaufort and Jacksonville. Cities outside of NC include: Richmond, VA, Muncie, IN, Virgina Beach, VA and more. Q: What if I have to cancel or reschedule my wedding?

Your non-refundable booking fee guaranteed I that held your wedding date exclusively for you. I do realize unforseen circumstances do arise, and I am not heartless, you may apply the non-refundable booking fee to an alternative date, (if I am available).

Q: What is your payment policy?

The non-refundable booking fee is due to secure your wedding date, the remaining balance for everything you have selected, (either as installments or a one time payment), is due no later than 4 weeks prior to the wedding.

Q: A family member is helping pay for the photography, is that a problem?

Not at all. Please keep in mind that regardless of who pays for my services, I consider the bride and groom my clients. Only they can determine the details of the contract.

Q: What type of payments do you accept?

I accept cash (if in person), personal checks, money orders or cashier checks and most major credit cards.

Portrait Photography

Q: What type of photography do you do?

I would describe the type of photography that I do, whether in the studio or on location, as a combination of fashion editorial with portraiture techniques to create Fresh, Modern & Fun images. I like to let my photos speak for themselves. Since you found these questions I am assuming they did just that and you like them as much as I do.

Q: How do I pick between having studio and location portraits?

Both types have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Studio session allow the photographer complete control the weather, lighting and you get a choice of backdrops and sets. Since lighting plays a huge part in photography, (it is used to set the mood and style of the portrait) studio portraits can be anywhere from soft to edgy. Location sessions are great for large groups, (since the space if virtually unlimited), if you want to use a substantial prop, (such as a motorcycle or car). Most visitors want to make them jealous back home and what better way than a portrait of a romantic stroll at sunset on the beach. So consider what kind of portrait you want before choosing.

Q: What type of equipment do you use?

I use all state of the are digital cameras and equipment, including a professional portable light system. This equipment virtually allows me to take studio quality portraits at any location.

Q: Where is your studio?

My studio is located at 226 Chatham St. Newport, North Carolina.

Q: Where do you take location portraits?

Anywhere and everywhere. The local North Carolina beaches are by far the most popular location. One of the best local beaches for photography is at Fort Macon State Park, Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. You get several backgrounds within walking distance of each other. The Fort has many features including mood lighting, a variety of textured backdrops and multi-levels. The beach at the park is pristine, so you do not get any houses or other distractions to take away from the feel of the ocean.

I also love to shoot portraits in urban locations. Historic Downtown New Bern is one of my favorite East Carolina locations for H.S. Seniors, Fashion Bridals and engagement sessions. Both Raleigh and Wilmington offer an astounding variety of locations for portraits with an urban twist. I will come to you, so anywhere from Emerald Isle to Harkers Island from Beaufort to Havelock, and even to the Triad area. If you know where you want to go, I will meet you there. Depending on the location there may be a small travel fee required.

Q: Can I tell the photographer what I like or want

Absolutely! I pride myself on my ability to listen to what you envision and then recreate those images on paper. I want your portraits to represent the real you. By telling the photographer what you like about yourself, (examples: your hair, muscles or a tatoo), he will try to highlight those features or items, (having you flip or play with your hair, flex your muscles, or spotlight your tatoo), etc. The same goes for anything you would rather not highlight. If you contacted the studio ahead of time, you might have received a questionnaire, if so please fill it out and bring it with you.

Q: What kind of cloths should I wear?

Fashion play a huge part in who you are, no matter what your gender is. Most photo sessions allow about one hour shooting time, take this into account when deciding if you need more that one outfit. Jackets or layering is an easy way to accomplish different looks without much fuss. If your portrait session is for more than just you, coordinate your outfits so that they compliment each other, this does not mean they have to be identical, you just do not want them to clash, (or maybe you do).

Q: Can I bring anything with me to my photo shoot?

You are encouraged to bring any item(s) that revel or support the real you. A prop can be as simple as an heirloom necklace to as extravagant as a motorcycle. Examples: If you are a musician, bring your instrument(s) or if you are an athlete, bring something that represents your sport(s).If you are an artist, bring a sample of your work or even something as simple as a paint brush. If your child has a favorite toy, bring it with you, it might help to keep them smiling.

Q: Do you take H.S. Senior / Graduation portraits?

Yes, I enjoy working with young people, they make interesting and compelling portraits. Most seniors are interested in session that includes things they enjoy doing and places they like to go. Additionally, l use some lighting techniques to produce high contrast portraits with colors that pop, like you see in magazines, CD sleeves and movie posters. If you want one wearing your cap and gown, please do not hesitate to bring them along. Do not worry, we will do some momshots too!

Q: How many photos can I expect?

For a typical portrait session I usually deliver 15 - 30 images for you to choose from. Of course if we are shooting a large group or have a longer session, more images would probably be made.

Q: Do I get the negatives?

Since I shoot in digital, the files, (negatives), are either high or low resolution files. All images have had basic color & exposure corrections made. Both are available for purchase, on your choice of CD or DVD formats. Note: some portrait session packages include a copy of the low resolution files.

Q: What is the difference between low and high resolution?

Low resolution files are suitable for 4x6 copies, anything larger will not print clearly. High resolution files are the same files I use to create your finished portraits, as such, you can produce up to wall size prints.

Q: Why should I order from you?

All images selected for prints, canvas, albums and misc. items through me, have been not only color & exposure corrected but digitally enhanced with small imperfections and blemishes removed, (as needed), and cropped for artistic effect or use, (such as jewelry). This allows me to produce something a little extra special in your finished portraits. These choices are professionally printed (depending on size) on single or double matt board or quality paper to insure exceptional merchandise.

Q: What do I need to know before scheduling a session?

Please take into account possible restraints when considering a time. If your reason for a portrait is a one-time event, (such as prom), make sure you choose a time when any preparations will be completed (such as hair or nails), yet early enough not to intrude upon the event itself. If your session if for or includes children, please keep in mind nap-times, meals and bed-time. If your session is either for a group or is a location session, allow for traffic and drive time for everyone. Location sessions are usually scheduled for evening, so also allow for anyone coming after work.

Q: How do I schedule a portrait session?

I do both studio and location portraits by appointment only, so you can either call or e-mail me. I make every effort to schedule your session when it will be convenient for you. I have an information sheet, the questionnaire and the portrait agreement, which I would like to send you ahead of time. I require a small booking fee and your signature on the portrait agreement to secure your time, so please return them both as quickly as possible. The balance is due at the actual portrait session.

Q: What if I am a visitor to Eastern North Carolina?

If you know ahead of time when you will be visiting, please call or e-mail me with the dates, to avoid any conflicts or allow me time to resolve them. When scheduling a date a few weeks, or even months in advance, a small booking fee of $50 will insure the availability of your date. While I can not guarantee date availability, booking fees are not required for last minute scheduling. Even with little notice I will do my best to be available.

Q: How do I view my photos?

Once your photos have been color & exposure corrected and possibly custom cropped, you will be invited to an in-studio preview session. During this session you can view, select and purchase your portraits. Note: I offer a discount for purchases made during your preview. After the preview your photos will be placed online. There you, your family or friends can view and purchase at their leisure. To find your photos, go to the web site, rddeckerphotography.com, and click on the link entitled view proofs located at the entrance. If you are a visitor to the Crystal Coast, and the in-studio preview is not possible, your photos will be placed online as quickly as possible.

Q: What type of payments do you accept?

I accept cash (in person), personal checks, money orders and cashier checks. If it is unavoidable and you need to use a credit card, a service charge may be added.

If you have any additional questions or I can help you in any way, just drop me an email, give me a call, or use the contact form at my website.
